How this calculator works

Amazon ranks every book by how recently and how often it sells. We map those Best Seller Ranks to an estimated daily sales volume using a piecewise model — a series of rank bands, each interpolated between its endpoints — with separate curves for ebooks and print books. A marketplace multiplier then adjusts the U.S. estimate for stores like Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.de. The whole thing runs in your browser, so the result updates the instant you change an input.

Where to find the Best Seller Rank for a Kindle book

Amazon lists the Best Seller Rank right on every book's product page — here's how to find it:

  1. Open the book's page on Amazon (the one you want to check).
  2. Scroll down to the “Product details” section (for print books it may be called “Product information”).
  3. Look for the line labeled “Best Sellers Rank.” For a Kindle ebook it reads something like #1,234 in Kindle Store; for a paperback or hardback it reads #1,234 in Books.
  4. Enter that main store number above. Ignore the smaller sub-category ranks listed beneath it (like “#5 in Self-Help”) — this calculator uses the overall store rank.

Tip: on mobile, tap “See more” in the product details to reveal the rank. Using Publisher Rocket also surfaces BSR for any book without manual digging.

Why the Amazon sales rank matters

Amazon never reveals real sales numbers, so Best Seller Rank is the closest public signal you have to how well a book is actually selling. Knowing how to read it — and roughly convert it to sales — is one of the most useful skills in self-publishing:

  • Size up the competition. Before you write or price a book, check the BSR of the top titles in your niche to see whether there's real demand — and how much money is on the table.
  • Track your own momentum. Rank updates throughout the day, so watching it tells you almost immediately whether a launch, promo, or ad campaign is working.
  • Validate demand and forecast revenue. Converting rank to estimated daily sales lets you project a book's earning potential before you commit to writing it.
  • Benchmark categories. Knowing the rank a book holds shows you how many sales per day it takes to become a category bestseller and earn that orange “#1 Best Seller” badge.

Frequently asked questions

Amazon Best Seller Rank (also called Sales Rank or ABSR) is a number Amazon assigns to every product based on how recently and how often it sells compared to everything else in the store. A BSR of #1 is the best-selling item; the higher the number, the fewer recent sales. Books also get sub-category ranks, but this calculator uses the main store rank.
